Word of the Day: Ab Ovo

Ab ovo is an ancient adverb meaning “from the beginning.” A few other meanings for Ab Ovo:

  • The name of a duet from France that performs electronic music.
  • An IT company
  • One of the twin eggs of Leda and Zeus

Not all of the reference materials are clear on this. I recommend you read this to get a clearer picture.

Here’s the deal: Leda was just some regular chick. Zeus, for unclear reasons, pretended to be a swan and then raped Leda. What kind of weird experience would that be? Anyway. Instead of giving birth, Leda laid two eggs. Each egg contained twins. Helen of Troy came from one of those eggs.

The mythology isn’t clear on eggsactly who her twin was (sorry couldn’t help myself). It was either a sister Clytemnestra or a brother, Pollux, but most stories say Pollux was twin to Castor in the second egg, so who knows…like all good dramas in life, there are different stories depending on who you ask!
