Opera Release Rocks!

Opera 10 is out and I can say without a doubt it absolutely rocks. New features include a turbo browser to speed up slow loading websites (you can set to on, off or automatic) and finally a spell checker! That has been one of my biggest beefs about this lightning fast browser from the beginning.

Opera is the best browser for blogging because it loads pages as quickly as if they were on your hard drive. But because Opera does not play well with Java, I have had problems in other applications.

I tried Opera on Facebook today to see how well it performed. I have never been able to upload photos before with the Opera browser on that java-based site. At first glance things did not look good. The album cover images look all pixelated. I deleted an old album with no problem and it actually worked when I uploaded a picture using the classic interface! Unfortunately the images inside the album look like crap because of the pixelation problem. I noticed that all the images on every page I visit look like that. It’s just not playing nice, even with png files. Bummer.

Anyway, at least its functioning with Java. I can live with that. I’m sticking with Opera for my blogging but I’ll think I’ll be using Firefox for Facebook and regular browsing!

As it turns out, you want to make sure the “turbo” feature is on automatic or else pages will load with lowest memory resulting in the poor appearance I noticed. Also, make sure your display settings are on “clear type” for windows. I’ll be using Opera for everything now!!!

The reason for the “pixelation” is that you are using Turbo which re-compresses images to a lower quality as one if its methods to save bandwidth. See http://help.opera.com/Windows/10.00/en/turbo.html for more information.

I also found a difference when I put turbo on automatic and made sure the clear type was on for windows. I have no problem with the pages now.
